Crypto Newbie / PNL Calculator
Crypto PNL Calculator — instant profit & loss
A PNL (profit-and-loss) calculator answers the simplest question in trading: did I make money on this trade? Enter how many coins you bought, your buy and sell prices, and any trading fees. The calculator shows your net profit, percentage return, and fee impact.
Most beginners look at the on-screen 'unrealized gain' on their exchange and assume that's their profit. It's not — until you actually sell, slippage and fees are not yet applied. This tool lets you model a trade BEFORE you click sell.
Trade result
- Cost (incl. fees)
- $50,050.00
- Proceeds (after fees)
- $64,935.00
- Total fees
- $115.00
- Profit / Loss
- $14,885.00
- Return %
- +29.74%
ⓘ Fees on most major exchanges are 0.05–1% per side. Decentralized exchanges add slippage (often 0.3%+) and gas fees on top. For tight margins, both add up fast.
What does PNL mean in crypto?
PNL is short for 'profit and loss' — the realized result of a closed trade. A position is 'PNL positive' when your sell price minus fees exceeds your buy price plus fees. 'Unrealized PNL' is the same calculation done on the current market price, before you've sold. Realized PNL is the number that actually matters for your wallet (and for taxes).
How to calculate crypto PNL by hand
The basic formula: PNL = (sell price × units − sell fees) − (buy price × units + buy fees). If you bought 1 BTC at $50,000 with 0.1% fee, your cost basis is $50,050. If you sell at $65,000 with 0.1% fee, you receive $64,935. Net PNL = $14,885 (29.7% return).
Why fees matter more than beginners think
A 1% trading fee per side sounds tiny. But on a tight 5% move, fees eat 40% of your gross profit.
- Centralized exchanges (Binance/Coinbase): tier-based fees from 0.02% to 1.0% per side.
- DEX swaps: 0.05–1% pool fee plus network gas plus slippage. Total cost often 0.5–2%.
- Card-buy fees: anywhere from 1.5% to 5% — almost never worth it for a small frequent buyer.
How taxes change the picture
In most countries, every sale is a taxable event. If you bought BTC at $20k and sold at $60k, the $40k gain is taxable in the year of sale — even if you immediately bought it back.
This calculator doesn't apply tax — discount your headline profit by your jurisdiction's capital-gains rate to see your true take-home.
Realized vs unrealized PNL
Until you sell, you have unrealized PNL — a number that changes every second. Realized PNL is what shows up in your bank account.
Most experienced traders track both: unrealized to know where they stand, realized to know what they've actually earned.
Frequently asked questions
+Does this PNL calculator work for any coin?
Yes. The math is the same whether you're trading BTC, ETH, SOL, or any altcoin.
+Does it include slippage?
Not directly — model slippage by entering a slightly worse sell price than the quote you saw.
+Should I include exchange withdrawal fees?
If you're moving the coin off-exchange, yes — add the withdrawal fee to your costs.
+What's a realistic break-even on a small trade?
With 0.1% per-side fees, you need a 0.2% price move just to break even. With 1% per-side fees, you need 2%.
